In Portugal there are two things I love - part two
No. 2: Pastel de nata!
Pastel de nata is a Portuguese egg custard tart. „Nata“ means cream, so it translates to „pastry of cream“. Pastéis de nata (original pasteis de Belém) were created before the 18th century by Catholic monks in Belém who, expelled during a revolution in 1820, began baking to earn money. The pastries became very popular. Today, many pastelarias in Lisbon produce them.
One of them is Fábrica da Nata. Located in the heart of Lisbon in a historical building, it is famous for its Pastel de nata. The coffee shop has the bakery area incorporated, so visitors can have a sneak peek how the pastries are getting prepared, baked and served fresh - and if you‘re lucky slighly warm, too - to the customers.
