The language of flowers
Not only are florals trending this season, they’re spilling into the next as designers explore their darker side. Whether that will carry over in Gucci’s Resort show tomorrow remains to be seen, but meanwhile, over at the Gucci Museo in Florence, an exhibition called The Language of Flowers is drawing the house’s iconic Flora pattern into new territory.
The idea behind the exhibition, says curator and Palazzo Grassi director Martin Bethenod, was "anything but art-meets-fashion". Instead, he wanted to see how contemporary art might push the floral conversation further. "Even the Flora can be very light or very profound depending on how you look at it," he observes. "On one side, there’s the glamour, la dolce vita, and triumphant femininity. On the other, there’s a statement about life’s fragility, vanity, and nature’s impermanence."
